The whisky pairing gets all the magazine covers. The truth is that a great many cigar lovers — especially in Cuba, Spain and Italy — pair their daily smoke with coffee, not spirits. It's a quieter ritual, no less rewarding, and far more accessible to the working day.

What makes coffee a natural fit

Coffee and cigars share the same chemistry of dark, roasted, lightly bitter aromatics. Both lift cedar, leather, cocoa and earth notes. Coffee also resets the palate between draws, where alcohol can numb it. For shorter cigars in particular, coffee is often the better match.

Pairings to try

Espresso + a morning Petit Corona

The intensity matches: a quick, focused shot of espresso alongside a 30-minute Petit Corona. Try a Davidoff Aniversario Entreacto or any of the petit-format cigars in our Davidoff range.

Cappuccino + a Robusto

Milk softens the espresso's bitterness and creates a creamier counterpart to medium-bodied cigars. Pair with a Oliva Serie V Melanio Robusto or a Camacho Connecticut Robusto.

Pour-over + a refined Dominican

A clean, single-origin pour-over with bright acidity is the right companion for cigars where you want every nuance to come through. A Arturo Fuente Don Carlos No. 4 works beautifully here.

Cuban coffee + a Cuban cigar

The most authentic pairing. Strong, dark, lightly sweetened — Cuban coffee is built to accompany a strong Cuban smoke. With a Cohiba Siglo VI or a Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills Reserva, this is the closest you'll get in your living room to a morning in Havana.

Practical notes

  • Pair coffee with shorter formats. A 90-minute Churchill is the wrong cigar for a 10-minute coffee break.
  • If you take sugar, take less than usual. The cigar already adds sweetness.
  • Try the cigar first, the coffee second; reverse the order from spirit pairings.

The cigarillos question

For a true short break — fifteen minutes between meetings or after a meal — cigarillos work where a full cigar can't. The Davidoff Mini Cigarillos line in particular pairs precisely with espresso. Don't dismiss them as a lesser option; they are a different format with their own logic.
