Cuban gordo cigars — anything at a 58 ring gauge or above — are the rarest corner of the Havana catalogue.
Cuba has resisted the big-ring trend far longer than Nicaragua or Honduras, so the handful of Havanas that reach 58 and beyond tend to be anniversary pieces and limited releases rather than regular production. The appeal is the same everywhere: a very wide ring gauge burns cool and slowly, softening strength and pushing the filler blend, rather than the wrapper, to the front.
Current examples include the Cohiba Majestuosos 1966 and Robustos Supremos Edición Limitada, and the H. Upmann Supremas No. 2.
Because the size is so scarce in Cuba, most big-ring smokers look to the New World gordos. The nearest regular-production Havanas are in Cuban toros, and the rest of these releases sit in Limited Editions.
