Robusto cigars — the most popular vitola of all. A thick ring gauge and a relatively short length deliver rich flavour in around 45 minutes.

Typically measuring around 4 7/8 to 5 1/2 inches with a 48–52 ring gauge, the robusto is the modern benchmark: long enough to develop real complexity, short enough to fit into an afternoon. The wider ring gauge lets blenders combine more leaves, producing a cool, generous draw and a rich, rounded smoke from the first light.

Some of the most celebrated cigars in the world are robustos — the Cohiba Robustos and the Partagás Serie D No. 4 among Havanas, alongside a huge field of acclaimed New World releases from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. If you are just getting started, the robusto's balance of size and smoking time makes it an ideal first format — our guide to the best cigars for beginners is a good place to begin.
